Our Vision · A long-term commitment

Observe. Learn.
Improve.

Better roads are built through better understanding. Progress comes from recognising the challenges people experience, investigating the reasons behind them and applying what we learn to future decisions. BLKBOX exists to make that process more connected, more informed and more useful to the people responsible for our transport networks.

Why BLKBOX exists

The road looks different from behind the wheel.

Highway networks are traditionally understood through maps, traffic surveys, collision records, site inspections and other established methods.

Each provides valuable evidence. Together, they help transport professionals understand how a network operates.

But the experience of travelling along a road reveals another important perspective.

From behind the wheel, the approach to a junction, the visibility of a pedestrian crossing, the position of a road sign and the movement of surrounding traffic become part of a continuous decision-making environment.

These are the conditions drivers respond to in real time.

BLKBOX brings this driver-perspective evidence into the wider transport-planning picture.

A clearer evidence base

A more complete picture of the highway.

When combined with established survey methods, recorded observations help professionals examine how road layout, visibility, signing and interactions influence behaviour at specific locations.

This perspective is especially valuable when investigating potential conflicts involving vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and people who wheel.

It adds practical context to the factors that influence whether someone is seen, whether a manoeuvre is anticipated and how road users respond to one another.

Road safety investigations benefit from evidence that captures both network performance and the experience of travelling through it.

Driver-perspective observations complement collision analysis, traffic counts, speed surveys, pedestrian and cycle monitoring, site inspections and community feedback.

Together, these sources support a more detailed understanding of how a location functions, how road users interact and which conditions merit closer investigation.

For transport authorities and consultants, this strengthens the evidence available for identifying safety concerns, developing interventions, assessing options and evaluating outcomes.

The aim is not simply to document problems after they occur. It is to improve the understanding of the conditions that contribute to risk and provide a stronger basis for preventative action.

This approach aligns with the wider ambition of Vision Zero: working towards a transport system in which deaths and serious injuries are eliminated.

A professional working environment

Better evidence for better decisions.

BLKBOX Survey and Studio are being developed to connect purposeful data collection with spatial analysis, evidence review and professional reporting.

Survey brings together the observations required to investigate a transport challenge.

Studio provides the working environment for examining those observations alongside relevant network information and supporting evidence.

Together, they create a connected approach to road intelligence, helping transport teams move from identifying a concern to understanding the underlying conditions and developing an informed response.

The platform is designed to strengthen professional judgement, support transparent decision-making and improve the continuity of evidence across the life of a scheme.

From initial investigation and option development to monitoring and evaluation, BLKBOX aims to make each stage of the process more informed by the last.

The OLI philosophy

Progress comes from learning.

01

Observe

Understand the challenge through direct observation, established evidence and the experiences of road users.

02

Learn

Connect the evidence, examine the interactions and identify what the findings mean for the decisions ahead.

03

Improve

Use that knowledge to inform action, evaluate outcomes and continue improving the network.

The process doesn't end with one survey, one intervention or one report. Each project creates an opportunity to build on what has already been learnt.

Our long-term commitment

Success is a better experience for road users.

We don't measure success simply by the amount of information collected or the number of organisations using BLKBOX.

We measure progress by the contribution our work makes to understanding the road network and improving the experience of those who travel through it.

Our ambition is to help transport professionals recognise emerging concerns, understand difficult locations and make more informed decisions in pursuit of safer, more accessible and better-performing streets.

That is the long game we're committed to.

Observe. Learn. Improve.

Our shared future

What can we improve together?

We're interested in working with transport authorities, consultants and other professionals who share the ambition to understand their networks more deeply. If you're developing a scheme, investigating a recurring concern or exploring new approaches to road intelligence, we'd welcome the conversation.
