BLKBOX Survey · For transport professionals

Better questions deserve
better evidence.

Every successful investigation begins with a clear understanding of the problem. BLKBOX Survey takes a purposeful approach to evidence collection, helping transport teams investigate highway concerns, inform scheme development and evaluate changes on the network.

Early pilot enquiries welcome.

A survey with a purpose

What brought this location to your attention?

Understanding the reason for a commission is the starting point for choosing an effective approach.

01 / COMMUNITY

A concern raised by the community

Investigate recurring issues reported by residents, businesses, visitors, elected members and other road users.

02 / SAFETY

A collision or road safety concern

Examine the highway conditions, road-user interactions and behaviours surrounding a location, alongside established collision evidence.

03 / SCHEME

A proposed or completed intervention

Build baseline evidence, assess changing conditions and support monitoring and evaluation with methods appropriate to the scheme.

Stakeholder co-production

Tools for effective stakeholder co-production.

People experience the highway differently. A resident might encounter difficulty crossing a junction. A cyclist might experience repeated close passing. A business might regularly observe conflicts involving deliveries and pedestrians.

These experiences are valuable starting points for understanding local transport challenges.

BLKBOX aims to give residents, businesses and visitors a practical way to contribute their own observations, including voluntarily sharing relevant recordings of conflicts or difficult interactions on the highway.

For participating projects, authorised officers and consultants can review submitted material alongside site observations, collision records, traffic surveys and other established sources.

The objective is to bring lived experience and professional evidence together, strengthening the understanding of local concerns and helping teams identify appropriate next steps.

Voluntary submissions provide insight into reported experiences. Where the frequency or prevalence of an issue needs to be established, they are considered alongside appropriately designed surveys and other comparable evidence.

How a commission works

From the problem to the evidence.

01

Define the challenge

Establish the transport problem, desired outcomes and decisions the investigation will inform.

02

Design the approach

Agree the study area, survey methods, observation periods and supporting evidence appropriate to the commission.

03

Examine the findings

Review the observations geographically, explore supporting records and assess the patterns emerging from the evidence.

04

Inform the response

Present clear findings to support scheme development, stakeholder engagement, decision-making and future evaluation.

An informed client experience

Stay connected to your survey.

The value of a commission shouldn't be limited to a report delivered at the end.

BLKBOX is developing a browser-based client experience that brings authorised customers closer to the evidence throughout their survey.

Through Studio, clients will have a way to explore mapped observations, review relevant material and contribute to the direction of the investigation.

A more connected commissioning experience, from initial question to final findings.

A more informed approach

What outcome are you working towards?

Whether you're investigating a junction, responding to stakeholder concerns, preparing a business case or planning scheme monitoring, we'd welcome the opportunity to explore your requirements. Tell us about the location, the transport challenge and the decisions your evidence needs to support.

Start a conversation

Let's discuss your next project.

Tell us a little about your organisation, the location or transport challenge you are considering, and what you would like to achieve. This form prepares a draft; it does not send an enquiry.

No information is collected by BLKBOX from this form. You will receive copyable enquiry text until a receiving address is verified.
